Teaching methods
Having spent over a decade teaching science and mathematics online and serving as a senior examiner for both the IBDP and iGCSE, I have developed a teaching philosophy that is firmly rooted in understanding exactly how students think, where they stumble, and—crucially—what assessment criteria demand. My sessions are structured around active problem-solving rather than passive lecture; I guide students through carefully sequenced questions that mirror the cognitive demand of real examination papers, prompting them to articulate their reasoning aloud before I intervene. Because I have marked thousands of scripts, I can pinpoint the precise language, notation, and logical progression that distinguish a top-band response from a mid-range one, and I build that awareness directly into every lesson. I lean heavily on diagnostic questioning at the start of each session to identify misconceptions, then scaffold from the concrete to the abstract using dynamic visualisations, digital whiteboards, and interactive simulations that make abstract concepts—whether stoichiometry, calculus, or wave interference—tangible on screen. I also train students in exam craft: command-word decoding, time allocation, and the art of showing method marks even under pressure. Above all, I foster a growth mindset, celebrating the productive struggle of a difficult problem as much as the correct answer, because I have seen, year after year, that the students who learn to interrogate their own working are the ones who walk into the examination hall with genuine confidence rather than fragile memorisation.
