Passionate Chinese Tutor | Helping Students Build Confidence in Reading, Writing & Speaking
About
My name is Yu Xin, and I am currently an undergraduate studying Life Sciences at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I grew up in Malaysia and studied in Chinese schools from primary school to high school. I attended SJK(C) Hin Hua for my primary education and later Hin Hua High School in Selangor, which helped me build a strong foundation in the Chinese language and culture.
Growing up in a multilingual environment, I am fluent in Chinese, English, and Malay. Chinese is my mother tongue, and I obtained an A2 in Chinese in the UEC (Unified Examination Certificate, equivalent to A-Levels). I also achieved an A2 in English in UEC and scored 7.0 in IELTS (2025).
Before coming to Singapore for university, I frequently helped tutor my two younger brothers (aged 7 and 16), mainly in Chinese and English. Through this experience, I developed patience and learned how to adapt my explanations to different learning styles and age groups.
I am passionate about teaching and believe that learning a language should be engaging, encouraging, and enjoyable. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and gradually build confidence in their reading, writing, and speaking abilities. My goal is not only to help students improve academically but also to help them develop a genuine interest in the language.

Teaching methods
My name is Yu Xin, and I am currently a Life Sciences undergraduate at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I am originally from Malaysia, where I studied in Chinese-medium schools from primary school until high school. Growing up in a multilingual environment, I am able to communicate fluently in Chinese, English, and Malay. Chinese is my mother tongue, and I obtained A2 in Chinese in the UEC (Unified Examination Certificate). I also achieved A2 in English in UEC and scored 7.0 in IELTS in 2025. I teach students who would like to improve their Chinese language skills, whether they are beginners building their foundation or students who want to strengthen their reading, writing, and communication abilities.
Content & Lesson Structure
In my lessons, I try to understand each student’s current level, strengths, and areas they want to improve. Based on this, I adjust the lesson pace and materials so that the learning process feels manageable and effective. Lessons usually include vocabulary development, reading practice, sentence construction, and conversation practice. I also guide students through exercises together so that they can understand how to apply what they learn rather than only memorising it.
For students who are newer to Chinese, I focus on helping them build a clear foundation in pronunciation, vocabulary, and simple sentence structures. For students who already have some background, I focus more on improving comprehension, writing clarity, and overall confidence in using the language.
My Teaching Style
As a tutor, I try to be patient, approachable, and supportive. I understand that every student learns differently, and sometimes they simply need someone to explain things in a clearer and more encouraging way. I believe learning should not feel stressful or intimidating. My goal is to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and gradually becoming more confident in their abilities. I hope to help students improve not only their academic results, but also their confidence in using Chinese in daily life and learning.
