Assess the need, start from the student's current level to take them further, trust them, remind them of the progress made, mistakes are part of the learning process, encourage them so they gain confidence, adapt exercises to their needs.
I was also a special needs assistant (AVS) for a few months with a student who had Down syndrome, I adapted exercises for this student and accompanied them during different classroom activities.

évaluer le besoin , partir du niveau actuel de l´eleve pour l´emmener plus loin , lui faire confiance , lui rappeler le chemin parcouru , l´erreur fait partie du processus d´apprentissage , l´encourager pour qu´il prenne confiance , adapter les exercices au besoin.
J'ai été aussi AVS ( assistante de vie scolaire ) quelques mois aupres d´un eleve avec un syndrome de Down , j´adaptais les exercices a cet eleve . et je l´accompagnais lors des differents temps de vie de classe .
