About

I am a passionate and patient educator of over 25 years. Having taught in several academically rigourous international schools across the globe, I know how important having a positive mindset is to be successful in mathematics. I am a creative and engaging teacher who is able to quickly diagnose and address misunderstandings to ensure the foundational skills are solid before exploring topics in depth and considering their real world applications. The concepts covered in sessions can be inspired by current classroom topics, the needs of future pathways, or created as a bespoke programme based on the school's curriculum. Through my lessons, students develop transferable skills, resilience and mathematical understanding. I aim to ensure they become flexible and creative thinkers.

Teaching experience

10+ years of teaching

Mathematics

Experience in curriculum design and teaching from Grade 6 to G10 MYP classes, including Extended Pathways and providing support with Gifted and Talent students. Small class work with underachieving students to build their foundational skills.
Grade 11 and 12 DP teaching including Internal Assessments (IAs), in both the Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, and Application and Interpretation SL courses. I have also taught the mathematics Paper 3 content of the latest Psychology HL course. My students consistently score above world averages for DP, and at high percentiles in both attainment and growth using MAP metrics.

Teaching methods

Each lesson will have a pre-determined objective which can be based on current topics in school, a particular curriculum or the student's personal targets. Low stake check-ins and diagnostics are key to understanding what misconceptions, or missing knowledge students may have before new learning can be had. Following this I use pattern spotting, demonstrations, and "what if..." questions to ensure students are actively thinking and engaged, rather than memorising procedures. I am experienced with Texas and Casio Graphical calculators and teach students how to confidently and quickly use them to solve problems in line with their school's curriculum. Interactive and dynamic software such as Desmos is also used to bring the topics to life, for example when learning about quadratic graphs. Learning is assessed throughout the lesson through a range of strategies including small quizzes, demonstrations, and the student being asked to explain their thinking. I am flexible and responsive to the needs of the student, and can provide additional work to be done between lessons.
